We have a large fish pond and obviously need to do something fast. We have black weed mat on our fences for dog control. How effective will this be against cane toads? And how important is it to have a barrier which is sunk into the ground - I've read it needs to may need to be about 10 cm deep. Would a combination of the mat and a sunken barrier be effective?

The weed mat and the barrier should be effective. You can bury the weed mat as an effective barrier.
