Description

White duck with flesh-coloured bill and legs, dark upperparts and chestnut breast-band. Plumage sometimes rust-stained. Immature: duller, flecked grey and brown.

Habits

Diurnal nocturnal, Feed by walking rapidly and swinging their bills from side to side to sieve food from the shallow water. May also stamp their feet to force prey up and out of the mud.

Habitat

Coastal Wetlands Forest, Lakes & swamps; shallow water ad. grass & mangroves; inland waters; floodplains; monsoon forest.

Notes

A protected waterfowl species that is not allowed to be hunted even during waterfowl hunting seasons.

Breeding

February March April May June July, 6 to 12; rich creamy-white eggs, Females incubate the eggs for 30 days, both sexes share in nest building and care of young.
